DENTAL CARE
Biological Dentistry emphasizes the use of nontoxic restoration (filling)
materials for dental work, with a particular emphasis on not using silver/
mercury amalgam fillings. It also takes into consideration the impact that
dental toxins and hidden dental infections can have on overall health. Mercury
has been recognized as a poison for hundreds of years and in 1988 the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) declared scrap dental amalgam a hazardous
waste, requiring special handling and disposal. In early 1992, Germany banned
the manufacture and sale of amalgams and in Sweden a ban is pending and the
government pays 50% of the cost of removal of amalgam fillings. While mercury
amalgam fillings are still quite common in the U.S., there are dentists who
understand the health implications and have stopped using them. The book,
Whole Body Dentistry, by Mark Breiner, DDS is an excellent resource.
